DRAGON BOAT RACING!

Elder and Sister Ngai invited us to watch the International Dragon Boat Races on Friday, July 3rd. These races are taking place in Victoria Harbour Tsim Sha Tsui, and that is practically in our 'backyard'.
Covered seating is provided with several large fans blowing to provide some relief from the heat,
and
ITS FREE OF CHARGE.

This is only one of the events for the Dragon Boat Festival.  Since June 20th,  there have been races taking place in other areas of Hong Kong.
This festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a Chinese national hero who drowned himself in the Mi Lo River 2,000 years ago, in protest against corrupt rulers.  To scare away the fish from eating his body, the townspeople beat drums and threw glutinous rice dumplings called zongzi into the water.  Today this event is remembered by Chinese people around the world who eat zongzi and go swimming or at least dip their heads in rivers and lakes.

These boats are decorated with dragon heads and tails at each end.  They are almost 33ft. in length, and carry 20 - 22 paddlers with a steersman at the back, and a drummer at the front.
There are both men and women teams.
One of the teams is U.S. Hong Kong, but they finished 2nd in their heat of the race.
This race was a photo-finisher and was exciting to watch.
Thailand and Singapore are strong teams, but Hong Kong is right in there.
The last day is on Sunday, so we won't be watching the championship races, but
the afternoon has been quite enjoyable,
and we appreciate Charles and Shirley's invitation and our time with them.
Can you find Grandma B?
